Built for Oxford's businesses

Oxford has real strength in life sciences, publishing and research spinouts, and creators and online business owners here don't need a generalist down the road — they need specialists who answer quickly and price fairly. Because we work online, you get exactly that, plus a nudge towards the right local support: OxLEP Business is a good first stop for grants and advice, and our Swoop-powered funding portal searches 1,000+ lenders and grant schemes on top.

How are royalties and advances taxed?

Book deals, licensing and catalogue income behave differently from a straightforward fee. An advance is normally taxable when you become entitled to it rather than when the work is finished, and it is then set against future royalties — so the year you receive it can carry the tax for income you will "earn" later. Overseas royalties may arrive net of withholding tax, and foreign tax credit relief depends on holding the statements. Some royalty income may be non-trading in nature depending on your circumstances, which changes both the tax treatment and what you can deduct against it. It is a case for advice rather than a rule of thumb.
