One to one coaching for Social Leader members. Running a social organisation is two jobs — the cause, which is why you took it on, and running the thing, which nobody trained you for.

What we work on

Most businesses focus on performance and lack purpose. Many charities lack performance and focus on purpose. The coaching works on whichever half is missing.

For most of the people we work with that is the performance half: the numbers, the systems, the difficult conversations and the decisions. The purpose was never in doubt.

How it runs

  • A session with Andy every month, one to one
  • A written plan with a ninety-day outcome, milestones and next actions
  • Scored at the start, so you can see the movement
  • Someone to ring between sessions when a board meeting goes sideways
  • A business leader alongside you through Connect, where that would help

Who Andy is

Clore Social Leadership Fellow, 2015. Andy was named in the January intake announced by Third Sector.

Member of the Creative Communities Group. Background across retail, leisure, youth services and social enterprise. He also co-owns the Buzz group of accountancy and advisory firms.

Questions

Is coaching the same as mentoring?
No. A mentor has done the thing and tells you how they did it. A coach does not need to have done it and works by asking rather than telling. Connect is the mentoring side.
Do I have to be a member?
Yes, the coaching is for Social Leader members. Talk to Andy first if you want to work out whether it is for you.
What does it cost?
It depends on the organisation and how often we meet. You get a figure in writing before anything starts.
Can a funder pay for it?
Often. Capacity building and governance support are within scope for many grant programmes, and we can write the part of the bid that describes the work.
